I can still remember the night that my father found the Moder River in the huge atlas for the Encyclopędia Britannica. As far as I know, we have never traced our ancestory to this area. In fact, the last Moder we've traced married a woman from Cheb, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) which is on the Eastern border of Germany, while the Moder river ends in the Western border of Germany.
This was one of the few trips I took alone. After following the river as well as I could, I found the beginning. At the base of the Alsace-Lorraine mountains, a very small creek (about a foot wide) begins as the Moder River. The creek runs behind the barns shown at the left. The mansion on the right is across the street from the barns.
After finding the start of the river, I wound my way through small villages towards Hageunau, France. The river width increased as I moved on, but even at its widest it was only about 8 feet. Not very much for a guy who grew up close to the Mississippi River.
