As we made payments on our first house, we found 10 acres and purchased it on a land contract.  The 10 acres was bordered on 3 sides with woods and open to another 10 acre parcel to the East.

We spent years going over floor plans, and eventually came up with a custom plan that fit our budget if not our dreams. A small local builder built our house. A modest 1600 square foot ranch, it had the unique celestial windows and a raised ceiling in the living room. Eventually I (with the help of a young teenage neighbor girl) put up a stained pine ceiling. The fireplace was bricked to the sloping ceiling. Out the back windows was a dramatic old oak tree.

I built a huge L-shaped deck off the sliding glass door in the tiny family room. In front, I had an associate from work design a deck/walk way to try to give the front of the house some notable features. The garage was a wonderful 30 X 32 foot - enough for our eventual tractor, bikes, tricycles, and motorcyles as well as the 2 cars.

Eventually, children started coming along.  Out in the country there were no sidewalks (or paved roads) for Julie to ride her bike and I was traveling about 45 miles to work. So we started to look to move to the city.
