As soon as we could, we gave up the benefits of air-conditioning and a very short drive to work for the tax advantages of a mortgage - we bought our first house. Only 1,000 square feet, but it had 700 square feet of basement and 3 bedrooms with a living room and a family room - plenty of space for a young married couple. This aluminum sided ranch was on a country road with about 8 other almost identical aluminum ranches, followed by about 8 similar aluminum tri-levels - then more country.

Having a yard brought with it the responsibility of cutting grass (and/or weeds). We never did much landscaping at this house.

Inside, I quickly learned how little I liked wall papering. We did one wall in our bedroom with a beautiful foil paper. It took the two of us over 10 hours and much cussing.

The kitchen was open to the family room with a sliding glass door on one wall. We painted the walls alternating bright orange and bright yellow and bought orange shag carpeting for the family room and new linoleum for the kitchen. This really didn't look as horrible as it may sound. But then, we were young and it was the 70's.
